A very disliked character in George Orwell’s animal farm is the pig napoleon. Napoleon is a very disliked character because of the way he selfishly manipulates the animals to get what he wants and gives the other animals a poor way of life. You can see how his greed and selfishness take over him as the story goes. We can also look at how Napoleons very smart techniques gain him the leader of the farm and support from other animals and the way he smartly works with the other pig Napoleon to do so. We can also understand how Napoleon is actually a very important character in this novel even though he is well hated, he creates a whole purpose for the text and helps us u understand the text as a whole.
Napoleon is a selfish pig that only wants good things for himself and no others. Napoleon unexpectedly takes over the farm as the leader. Once he is in charge you can see his true dark colors come out to shine as he begins to block out all other animals ideas to only get good things for himself. He gives other animals a poor way of life by not sharing his luxuries and continually lying to all the animals of the farm. Napoleon is also shown turning against old majors dream by changing all 7 commandments to suit him and brainwashing all other animals to believe it. He changes lines like “no animal shall kill any other animal without cause” to, ” no animal shall kill any other animal without cause ” so he can get away with killing other animals on the farm for not running under his rules or doing what he wants knowing the other animals are too dumb to understand. Napoleon also changes ” No animal shall drink alcohol ” to, “no animal shall drink alcohol to excess ” so he can get away with drinking it and representing exactly what humans did which is exactly what old major did not want. With Napoleon’s behavior when he gets in charge, we can see that this is a real-life problem and can happen to many other people in society around the world. People get overcome with greed and selfishness they forget about the things around them and lose care because they are so scared of losing something they really want. This is the authors purpose in doing this with napoleon to relate it to real people like in the Russian revolution. Animal farm is representing the Russian revolution in many ways and the animals represent real life people that’s why we see them have much feelings and napoleon have greed and selfishness. In Animal Farm, we can easily see how this badly affects napoleon on how he doesn’t want to lose control of the farm which causes him to act selfish and greedy.
Napoleons very smart techniques gain him leadership on the farm and support from other animals. Napoleon is a very smart and planned out the animal , this is why we see him become the leader of the farm and being loved by animals instead of being hated by them. In the novel, we can see Napoleon slowly but precisely move his way up to the top rankings on the farm. We can also see that he always has a way to cover up all the bad things he’s done so the rest of the animals think he’s done nothing wrong at all. There are many ways we can see him doing this. For example, he uses his pig friend squealer to talk to the animals privately about Napoleon, making napoleon look like an amazing god that is always right. Squealer is a very good weapon for napoleon because he is a very great speaker, he uses some sort of way of skipping from side to side and whisking his tail which somehow convinces animals to do his way. Napoleon then thinks on how the sheep are not as smart as the other animals, he then uses squealer to enforce the lines “four legs good, two legs” onto the sheep. Doing this it then blocks out whatever any other animals want to say so the animals only listen to him and no one else. He uses this tactic in the part of the novel to shut down snowball when he tried to make a statement of the windmill. As readers, we can actually see how Napoleon has used his brain and squealer to his advantage and is actually a very smart animal , Which makes us dislike the character Napoleon. The author’s main purpose for making Napoleon so smart and evil is too create feeling to the book. It makes readers dislike Napoleon in such a way because he is the bad guy but he’s smart and getting what he wants. It creates an emotional feeling so the readers really feel like they are there on the farm, giving an interesting spark to the book. This kind of thing where bad guys outplay the good guys and get what they want also happens in many films and other novels. For example, in Avengers infinity war the bad character Thanos manages to outthink and get rid of his opponent to get what he wants. This is just the same as in the book animal farm where Napoleon uses very smart techniques and manipulation to get his way through to the top spot.
Napoleon the bad pig gives purpose and emotional feeling towards the book. Without Napoleon in the novel the book would not be as exciting as it is. There would be no intensity/feeling to the book. The whole novel wouldn’t exist without Napoleon because it means no problem/ main idea, without the main idea comes no book. This shows that Napoleon is a very important character and is very much needed in a book such as Animal Farm. Napoleon gives the readers and real thing to think about while they are reading it. Napoleon is a pig taking over the farm in a very negative way like brainwashing animals.. We can see this happen when Napoleon is shown kidnapping the puppies from their mum and then using them against her will to attack snowball and get rid of snowball who is trying to do good for the farm. The mother then tries to stop her own puppies but from Napoleons brainwashing, ignores her and goes after snowball. As a reader we can see of Napoleons bad ways, this giving us hatred towards him and really tying us in with the book. Napoleon helps us understand all aspects of the book and the way they happen. For example, In the part where Boxer is getting taken away and we Benjamin see a sudden change. This is all because of Napoleon lying to the animals and saying boxer is getting taken care of but is going to die. This creates another whole interesting problem for the book all coming from Napoleon’s action. Which also gives us another reason to dislike Napoleon and an easier understanding of why he is so important. We can see how characters like him create a very thought out interesting book and really help up understand this text as a whole. Authors around the world make books like this with a main character as the problem and creating a great kick to the novel. This is the authors full main purpose in the novel so he can make a good book. Books or films like this then make much money and is why having a character like Napoleon is so critical for the novel to become a hit and gain lots of money for the author. Napoleon is the reason why George Orwell’s animal farm is such a big hit.
In conclusion, We can see Napoleon is viewed as one of the bad guys on the farm because of the ways he only cares about himself, changing many things to suit only him like changing the commandments and killing other animals and not representing old majors dream. You also see that Napoleon even being a bad and disliked character , actually very smart and planned out and uses squealer to manipulate other animals. This gives us a hatred feeling towards Napoleon. Lastly we can see how that having Napoleon act way in such a wicked makes us feel an emotional feeling disgust towards the character and gives us an understanding of the book as a whole and how Napoleon is the most important character on the farm, he creates all the problems which gives George Orwell’s animal farm and very interesting, intense and great book.

You’re making some good connections to other texts, but the point you are trying to make is not always clear. Remember to bring it back to the question you are answering. At the moment you are providing a break down of how Napoleon gained and maintained control of the farm. You need to discuss how you reacted to him as a character and how that reaction helped you understand the novel as a whole, this means elements like theme, symbolism and setting.
Hi Ewan,
Be careful of repeating yourself. There are a few times when you are saying the same thing and making the same point. You also need to keep bringing it back to the question.
Hi Ewan,
Some of the points you are making are not clear. It is difficult to understand what you are trying to say. Look back at the question. How does your like or dislike of a character helped you understand the novel as a whole. This means addressing the themes of the novel and how Napoleon helped you understand what the author was trying to say. As this essay is about your personal connection to a character, you can personalise it a bit more as well.
